While former Boston Bruins legend Zdeno Chara was finishing his first Ironman last weekend, another Bruins star took on his first triathlon event in Boston – goalie Jeremy Swagman competed in the bike section of a relay.

The 25-year-old from Anchorage, Alaska had done a lot of mountain biking growing up (his mother was a cyclist), but “this was my first time in a triathlon organized event,” he told bostonhockeynow.com after the race.

Swayman was competing as part of Team Human Powered Health. The team finished second in the weekend’s sprint relay, with the 6’3″ Bruins star finishing the 17.5 km bike leg in 29:32 – the fastest split of the day in the relay division.

“I just wanted to get first place, that’s all I cared about,” Swayman told bostonhockeynow.com. “Cycling is great cross-training. I’ve been doing it for years. Being able to do it on a structured stage, with a lot of other competitors was awesome to get the competitive juices flowing again. I felt pretty good on the bike.”

Swayman is expected to be the Bruins’ full-time starting goalie this year, but is in the midst of tough contract negotiations with the club. He’s confident a deal will be worked out, though.

“I know that it will take care of itself with time,” Swayman told Sports Illustrated for a story that was published the day of the race. “All I can do is control how I’m going to be a better goalie for the Boston Bruins this year. That’s all I’m focused on, and I know, again, it’ll work out.”
