USA Triathlon partners with Pure Spectrum, a CBD manufacturer

Early last week, USA Triathlon formalized a partnership with Pure Spectrum CBD – a Colorado-based cannabidiol manufacturer – through to 2023. “With its athlete-first approach and proven commitment to safety, quality and accuracy, Pure Spectrum is a clear leader in the growing CBD industry,” said Rocky Harris, Chief Executive Officer at USA Triathlon in last week’s press release. “We are partnering with Pure Spectrum to help educate triathletes of all levels about CBD and to provide a fully vetted CBD option.”

CBD is naturally found in the cannabis plant and is a non-psychoactive substance. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a high for users. The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) allow the use of CBD both in and out of competition.

Pure Spectrum is at the forefront of CBD’s burgeoning presence in the sports industry. In 2018 it became the first cannabis company to partner with a major sports organization following its sponsorship of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games. Pure Spectrum also sponsors more than 100 professional athletes including UFC fighter Megan Anderson and six-time Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) world champion Hunter McIntyre.

In May, Canadian long course triathlete Angela Naeth publically endorsed the role CBD oil had played in her treatment and recovery from Lyme disease. With the help of a Lyme’s Literate Doctor (LLD), Naeth supplemented her treatment with a daily dose of VID-CBD.

Earlier this year, Sean Mackinnon wrote an article in Triathlon Canada Magazine on CBD’s potential to be the next big thing when it comes to recovery. Following the recent legalizations in Canada and the United States, there is much optimism of its benefits, but the process is very in its infancy. Despite CBD being removed from the WADA prohibited list, products can be tainted with banned substances.

In light of this, the USA Triathlon and Pure Spectrum partnership is an endorsement of the company’s quality and testing procedure. “As athletes ourselves, we understand the incredible stress competitive sports puts on the body, which is why we’re proud to partner with USA Triathlon to bring the benefits of CBD to the most elite athletes competing today,” said Brady Bell, CEO and Founder of Pure Spectrum. “We want to provide athletes with an option that they can have the utmost confidence in. Pure Spectrum goes through extensive and rigorous testing to ensure all products are 100 percent free of THC or any banned substance.”

To ensure the safety of Pure Spectrum products, testing goes through multiple third-party labs to verify their contents and to ensure they contain no THC. The company also publishes complete test results from Botanacor — a leading Industrial Hemp and CBD testing laboratory — for all products online.

As part of the partnership, USA Triathlon and Pure Spectrum CBD will be incorporting an education program for coaches and athletes. Additionally, a comprehensive CBD FAQ section and a free webinar will be hosted on usatriathlon.org and purespectrumcbd.com. The webinar will feature a general overview of CBD as well as specific information about how endurance athletes can safely and effectively use the products.
