It was a case of deja vu at the Woodstock Triathlon, the season opening race for the MultiSport Canada Triathlon Series.

In 2014, Lionel Sanders and Angela Quick secured victories, and today, on a hot, humid, and windy day at Canada’s Dairy Capital, the duo once again rose to the top of the podium.

David Mackie led the field out of Pittock Lake with a 9:55 clocking for the opening 750m. Followed by Hector Rodriguez (10:22), and Alexander VanderLinden (10:30). Sanders, exited the water in 11:02 and made a rapid charge to the front of the race.

Sanders threw down a dominant 28:28 (42.1 km/hr) ride over the blustery 20 km bike course, and upon leaving T2, he took a 1:37 lead onto the 5 km run over VanderLinden, and 2:40 over Mikael Staer Nathan.

Sanders continued to step on the gas and posted the top run of 16:29 to take the overall victory in 57:15, breaking his own course record by 18 seconds. Staer Nathan picked up 45 seconds on the run, but VanderLinden did enough to stay in front to claim second (1:00:10), forcing Staer Nathan to settle for third (1:00:32).

The Sprint Duathlon (5 km run, 20 km bike, 2.5 km run) featured a close battle between Larry Bradley and Garvin Moses. Bradley opened with an 18:35 run to stay ahead of Moses by 14 seconds, he rode 33:03 to gain another 13 seconds, and ran 9:34 to finish in 1:02:24, just 22 seconds in front of Moses.

“It was a battle out there today with the amazing competition, the wind and my current fitness,” said Bradley, the 2012 Woodstock Sprint Duathlon Champion. “I just kept my head down and powered on trying to stay out front. Definitely, wasn’t easy with everyone racing so well this early in the season.”

Lionel Sanders and Prakash Pandya had a fun side bet going, where Pandya he had to finish within 13% of Sanders’ finishing time. The loser had to wear socks on their hands for the next 48 hours. You can see the how things transpired below.
