Will the Global Racing Calendar be Affected by Current and Potentially Ongoing Conflicts?
As geopolitical tensions rise, questions emerge about their potential impact on international racing.
World Triathlon
As several major series prepare to open their 2026 seasons, global headlines are intersecting with race destinations. Escalating tensions in the Middle East and security concerns in parts of Mexico have introduced a degree of uncertainty for athletes, organizers, and governing bodies.
For instance, the opening race of the 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) is scheduled for late March in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Heightened tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have shifted the broader security narrative in the region.
For now, the event remains on the calendar. However, sustained instability could influence travel decisions, athlete participation, and operational planning in the weeks leading up to race day.
Security concerns are not limited to the Middle East. While the Government of Canada currently advises avoiding all travel to the United Arab Emirates, parts of Mexico are also under an advisory to avoid all non-essential travel due to ongoing unrest and violence.
Expansion in the Gulf Region
Beyond races scheduled in the immediate future lies a broader strategic question. Recently, endurance sport organizations have actively expanded into the Gulf region.
For instance, in November 2025, the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) announced a Memorandum of Understanding with the Saudi Triathlon Federation aimed at accelerating the development of triathlon in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with ambitions to host a world-class event in Jeddah in November 2026.
Similarly, Ironman signaled expansion plans in Doha, Qatar, targeting 2027 for a new event. These announcements reflected long-term investment intent and confidence in the region as a growth market.
Monitoring an Evolving Landscape
It is too early to predict whether any 2026 events will relocate or face disruption. The season may ultimately proceed exactly as scheduled. Abu Dhabi could deliver a seamless opener. Saudi Arabia and Qatar may continue building their endurance sport portfolios without interruption.
For now, the 2026 calendar remains intact. However, how the season unfolds may depend on forces well beyond the sport itself.
