Despite the weather threats of hurricane Arthur to much of the east coast, Challenge St. Andrews appears to be outside the storm zone and is set to launch this Sunday, July 6. In attendance at all the weekend’s festivities is Olympian Simon Whitfield who is on-site working with juniors racing the sprint on Saturday. There is also a TriNB junior training camp in effect. During the press conference today, Whitfield commented that this was the first time working with juniors since his retirement and was excited to be doing so. He also said he was overwhelmed by the maritime spirit that made for a packed audience at the press conference.

Joining Whitfield on stage were Challenge Family supporters, Ironman World Champ Mirinda Carfrae and her husband, Ironman Champion Tim O’Donnell. Rounding out the impressive list of speakers was four-time world champion and triathlon legend Karen Smyers. All three athletes will be racing on Sunday.

The St. Andrews race is the second Challenge event in North America and takes place at the Algonquin Resort. In addition to the Challenge Half Distance triathlon and the Sprint Distance Triathlon, there is also a “Beat the Tide” 10 km run and “Cheat the Tide” 5 km Run/Walk on Saturday.
