Welland Half Iron & Triple Race Challenge Preview

Guembel, Gray, Linseman, Power, Allan, Zelazo, and Van Beurden to race.

Last year’s champion, Wolfgang Guembel, will be back to defend his title at Sunday’s Welland Half Iron Triathlon, part of the Recharge With Milk Triathlon Series.

Looking to take away the title from Guembel will be Nigel Gray (sacrificed his race last year to help and injured Richard Pady), Mark Linseman, and Ryan Power.

The women will have a new champion. Last years women’s winner, Deborah Powell, will be at the event but will be competing in the Swim/Bike race in preparation for her race at Challenge Roth.

Paolina Allan (2nd at Ironman Canada in 2005, 4th at Ironman Wisconsin 2006, and 5th at Ironman Lake Placid in 2009) is the race favourite, but will face a stiff challenge from local favourite Nicole Van Beurden (multiple top ten finisher at Ironman and 70.3 events), Ayesha Rollinson, Suzanne Zelazo, and age grouper Cindy Lewis (8th overall woman at last year’s Ironman Louisville).

The race is also the kick-off for the Series’ Triple Race Challenge. Wolfgang Guembel and Mark Linseman are the early favourites heading into that event.
