The Spanish city of Valencia is a popular location for sporting events and will welcome athletes this year for the first time at the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) T100 Triathlon World Tour. The event coincides with the World Triathlon Cup Valencia on September 20.

The city is no stranger to hosting world sporting events. It is well-known for its world class Valencia Marathon, but it will be the first time it is hosting the two triathlon events. The PTO is expecting 20 male and female elites on the start line for the 100km race taking place around the La Marina de Valencia on the Balearic Sea.

Host city ready for the challenge

It is also the first time a city has been chosen to host both a T100 and World Cup race on the same weekend in the same location. World Triathlon Elected President, Antonio F. Arimany touted the joint weekend as a great example of how the two organizations are partnering to bring more excitement and opportunities to the sport.

“By merging our efforts with PTO and the Spanish Federation, and delivering the T1oo and the World Cup events in Valencia on the same weekend, we are proving once again the greatness of the partnership, and it also offers numerous benefits, including amplifying the excitement surrounding the races,” said Arimany.

“It allows participants, spectators, and local communities to experience a vibrant celebration of triathlon, creating a more inclusive environment where fans can witness world-class performances and participate in mass participation events. Additionally, the collaboration enhances logistical efficiencies and maximizes resources, ensuring a seamless and high-quality experience for everyone involved,” he added.

History of great racing in Valencia

The new location replaces the T100 in Ibiza, Spain. The Valencia World Cup has been on the calendar since 2020, drawing big names like Olympic medallists Gwen Jorgensen, Vincent Luis, Alistair Brownlee, Beth Potter, Kristian Blummenfelt and Lisa Terstch. The start line this year for the T100 is shaping up to be another battle with top athletes Hayden Wilde, Jason West, Jelle Geens, Leo Bergere, Antonio Benito Lopez and Marten Van Riel, to name only a few of the 20 pro males. On the women’s side, Ashleigh Gentle, Caroline Pohle, Ellie Salthouse, Emma Pallant-Brown, Els Visser and Flora Duffy has been confirmed, among the list of 20 of the sport’s top women.

To date no start list has been released for the World Cup races.

President of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, Jose Hidalgo, welcomed the challenge adding the T100 to the weekend events.

“T100 wanted to continue in Spain, as it is a key country in the world of triathlon and we also want to live up tot he expectations,” said Hidalgo. “We are looking forward to the first competition in which both entities, World Triathlon and T100, will coexist.”

The weekend festival also adds new distances for age group athletes, who will get a chance to compete over the weekend in spring and super sprint distances.
