On the 43rd anniversary of Title IX, women are still working towards gender equality in sport. TriEqual, the organization dedicated to fairness, development and equality in the sport of triathlon and the founders of the #50WomentoKona movement, today announced a new petition and Web portal www.50WomentoKona.org to encourage action and advocacy in the case for gender equality to the World Triathlon Corporation.

Currently, women professional triathletes have 35 slots to race at Ironman Hawaii versus the 50 slots for professional men. TriEqual and its supporters believe it’s time to send the right message to future generations and make their voices heard on the issue of equal opportunity for the professional women at the Ironman World Championship.

The site www.50WomentoKona.org serves as a gateway to education, advocacy and action. Supporters can learn about the cause, easily sign the Change.org petition, directly email and compose Twitter messages to the Ironman CEO and Providence Equity Managing director (the owners of Ironman) as well as follow TriEqual on its social media channels to stay up to date on the latest information.

The web portal was designed by TriEqual volunteer, four-time Ironman finisher and social media expert Kevin Young.

“I’m passionate about racing triathlon and have been a long time champion of equality,” said Young. “I believe in equal opportunity, not just at the Kona start line, but with all things in life.  “50womentokona.org is a result of combining my passions to promote what I believe to be right. I encourage everyone who feels the same way to visit the site and take action today.”

“When it comes to TriEqual’s #50womentokona campaign, I have been profoundly inspired by the amateur athletes who will not benefit from the change yet are willing to put their time and resources into the project,” said Sara Gross co-founder of TriEqual, professional triathlete and two-time Ironman champion. “Kevin’s idea of creating a website that helps people understand our movement and easily take action is brilliant. My hope is that by gathering consensus we can speak in a unified voice. That is how change is made.”
