Triathlon Canada cancels National Championships, publishes tentative 2021 event calendar

Triathlon Canada has cancelled the 2021 elite and age-group national championships, which were scheduled to take place in Montreal in conjunction with the World Triathlon Championship Series Montreal. That event was originally scheduled for June, but has now been moved to August.

“We remain optimistic competitions will also return in Canada this summer in some provinces,” Triathlon Canada CEO Kim Van Bruggen wrote in an email to members of the association last week. “This will only happen if the local health authorities deem it possible.”

“Although not all provinces will be able to resume the same level of activity at the same pace, we do stand together in our request to have all athletes, coaches, officials, race directors, remain in their home provinces for training, and eventually competition, until it is deemed safe for provinces to open their competition and training facilities to athletes outside their provincial borders,” Van Bruggen continued. “In support of this directive, along with the continued unknowns with regards to our 2021 race calendar, we have decided to cancel our elite and age group 2021 National Championships, which was scheduled in conjunction with the Montreal races.”

Tentative 2021 Event Calendar

Triathlon Canada has also released a tentative calendar outlining qualifying races for next year’s World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships in Montreal, the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Abu Dhabi, and the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Townsville, Australia. International events

In the email Van Bruggen also outlined some of the planning being put in place in order to host international elite events later this year:

“Mirroring successful ‘bubble’ event plans which have taken place in Canada over the last year including the NHL playoffs and IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Edmonton, along with a series of curling events in Calgary, Triathlon Canada is working with the local organizing committees for the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Finals in Edmonton, and the World Triathlon Championship Series Montreal events to safely host these two key events.”
