Tollakson and Carfrae win 70.3 EagleMan
Hoogland gets fourth.
Ottawa’s Tenille Hoogland (26:27) trailed American Amanda Stevens (26:05) out of the water but grabbed the lead during the bike (2:20:24) to lead the race by over two minutes heading out onto the run.
However, despite the 4-minute gap that she had on Australia’s Mirinda Carfrae at the start of the run, Carfrae passed Hoogland with the top run 1:21:39 to win her second (last won in 2009) Ironman 70.3 EagleMan title in 4:15:31. American Tyler Stewart, who rode the top split of 2:19:33, added a 1:26:12 half marathon to claim second in 4:21:31, and defending champion Samantha Warriner (NZL) got third (4:23:02). Hoogland hung on for fourth (4:23:38), and Quebec’s Annie Gervais, Annie placed eighth (4:33:43).
American TJ Tollakson had a typically strong ride (a race best 2:03:41), and he ran a steady 1:22:28 to stay ahead for his second EagleMan title (last won in 2007) in 3:54:39. Australian Richie Cunningham used a 1:16:56 run to come from well back to finish second (3:57:43). Russia’s Stanislav Krylov got third (3:58:13).
