Recovering from injury, Victoria’s Kirsten Sweetland made her return to the ITU World Championship Triathlon Series to finish eighth (1:56:51) in Yokohama, Japan. “I struggled! ITU racing is harder than it looks. I have always done these while in top condition and never really appreciated how hard it is,” confessed Sweetland. “Overall I was really happy with my race. To be in contact with the leaders with the (limited) training I have done was really really exciting for me.” Sweden’s Lisa Norden won the hot and humid race in a sprint finish (1:55:56) ahead of New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt (1:56:00) and Japan’s Jure Ide (1:56:03). Germany’s Jan Frodeno won the men’s race (1:44:31). In second and third were New Zealand’s Kris Gemmell (1:44:49), and Spain’s Javier Gomez (1:44:52).
