Natascha Schmitt of Germany and Toni Colom of Spain are the winners of the 16th edition of the Triathlon Internacional de Portocolom.
The race had perfect weather conditions and more than 600 triathletes have enjoyed the competitions over 55.5 and 111km in Portocolom, located in the southern half of the east coast of the Balearic island of Mallorca, about 70km from Palma, in one of the earliest triathlon events of the European season.
Former Spanish Pro cyclist Toni Colom took the victory at the Triathlon de Portocolom on the 111 format (1 km of swimming, 100 km of cycling and 10 km of running). After an awesome bike performance he got a 5 minutes gap at the second transition. He had some problems in the water, but Colom could pull away from German Andreas Dreitz, one of the favorites, during the first ascent to Sant Salvador and then got a smooth victory and broke the course record (3:33:21).
“I’m so happy, it’s been a perfect race for me because of the format, I like the bike course… I had some problems swimming but I could recover and pushed hard on the bike to try to run ‘easy’ to the Finish Line,” said Colom, from Mallorca.
Dreitz was first runner up and German Sebastian Neef was third in his first ever professional competition.
In the female category, German Natascha Schmitt was leading the 111 race from the start and took a solid victory. Susan Blatt was second and Danish Tine Holst complete the top-3, and come back again to the podium of this race.
“It’s a nice destination and a beautiful course. The bike is really tough and you have to save forces to get to the finish line. To cycle up Sant Salvador twice it’s hard! I loved the experience and I even could enjoy the run leg. This format is fun,” said Schmitt.
Belgium Gleenn Pouleunis and German Lydia Liebnitky achieved the victory on the 55.5 format.
There were some celebrities racing at Portocolom, such as former professional cyclist Marcel Wust (19th overall) and Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz.
