Kevin Willis of Ottawa and Winnipeg’s Sandra Baars won today’s Canadian Iron 226 iron distance event in the Nation’s Capital.

Willis, in the 50-54 age group, swam 1:14:58 (all swim times in the event include the time in T1), then used the only sub-5 hour bike on the day (4:59:11), and ran 3:56:10 to take the overall win in 10:15:57. Quebec City’s Christian Arsenault finished second (10:53:35), and Stephane Pratte got third in 11:00:34.

Baars, in the 30-34 age group, swam 1:28:06, rode 6:01:41 and grabbed control of the race with a 4:08:00 marathon to earn the women’s victory in 11:44:36. Izzy Audette of Morin-Heights overcame a slow swim to move into second (11:57:05), and Ottawa’s Michelle Schuler finished just a scant three seconds behind for third (11:57:08).

Ottawa’s Rick Hellard won his third Canadian Iron 113 half iron distance title (two in a row) by leading the race with a 31:31 swim, after which he rode the top split of 2:20:33, and with a comfortable lead he ran a 1:40:35 half marathon for the winning time of 4:34:46. Matthew Posh of Cote St-Luc took second (4:40:17), and Ajax’s Peter Kornelsen third (4:41:27).

Kitchener’s Jennifer Gilmore took home the women’s win with a 39:03 swim, 2:48:48 bike, and 1:52:54 run. Caroline Theberge of Saint-Jer me posted the top bike (2:45:16) and run (1:50:37) to secure second spot (5:25:52), and Stittsville’s Katie McClean finished third in 5:34:08.

Montreal’s Bruno Sevigny won the Iron 226 Duathlon (4 km run, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run) in 10:19:05. And Marko Durbic of Toronto (4:37:46), and Linda Desmeules of Shipshaw (4:41:54) took wins in the Iron 113 Duathlon (2km run, 90 km bike, 21.1 km run).
