Race Director Felix Walchshofer Confirms Challenge Roth Unaffected by PTO Acquisition

Challenge Roth

In an Instagram announcement this morning, Challenge Roth Race Director Felix Walchshoefer answered the question on many people’s minds: Challenge Roth will indeed remain an independent race, as it always has been, and will not be affected by the upcoming 2027 PTO acquisition.

The news will come as a relief to many, given Roth’s historic and iconic status on triathlon’s global calendar. Arguably the most unique and sought-after race experience on the planet, its appeal runs far deeper than start lists or rankings – something Walchshoefer has spoken about extensively in past interviews.

While the 2027 calendar is moving toward greater unification of series – a shift that makes sense from both competitive and marketing perspectives by providing clearer narratives and pathways for championship racing – Challenge Roth has never been about that. Its ethos has always centered on atmosphere, community, and experience.

Even for professionals, Roth has long been about ambiance first. The fact that multiple long-distance world records have been set on this course could perhaps be described as a “happy coincidence” resulting from a fast layout, not the defining purpose of the event itself.

As triathlon enters a new era of consolidation, Roth’s independence serves as a reminder that some races transcend structures and series, standing instead as cultural landmarks in the sport, valued for how they feel and for the experience they provide.
