Quebec Triathletes dominate at the Canada Summer Games

Gold medals in the men's and women's relay.

Quebec’s men’s and women’s triathlon relay teams thrilled the hometown crowd by stealing with the show with a double gold performance on Friday at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

The Quebec women, led by Emy Legault of Ile, Perrot who will represent Canada at the Junior World Championships next month in London, stomped the field to win the women’s race with a time of 1:06:19. The 17-year-old Legault was joined by Elisabeth Boutin, of St. Lazare, and Laval’s Karol-Ann Roy.

“I’m very proud of our team and it is so amazing for us to win the gold,” said Legault.

Each athlete in the three-person team relay completes a 250-metre swim, 6.6-kilometre bike, followed by a 1.6-kilometre run. Athletes tag the next member of the team after completing each of the three disciplines.

“I really love the format. We were strong in all three disciplines today and that is what got us the gold medal. We are really happy.”

The trio of Quebec women were joined on the podium by Alberta’s Emily Wagner, Adeline Maunder and Jessie Lilly who won the silver medal at 1:07.39. Wagner, a multi-sport athlete at the Canada Summer Games won the gold in the individual triathlon on Wednesday, and was part of a bronze-medal winning swim relay team last week.

Ontari’s Sasha Boulton, Kirsten Vergara and Sam Klus rounded out the women’s podium in third at 1:07:51.

The golden day continued for Quebec as the young Canadian men dove into the waters of Lac Magog. The Quebec squad of Xavier Grenier-Talavera, of Vaudreuil-Dorion, along with Laval’s Francis Lefebvre and Alexis Lepage bolted away from the field to win the gold with a time of 58:28.

“It’s an amazing feeling to win. This was our goal all year and it is really the best feeling ever,” said the 19-year-old Lepage, who raced the anchor leg. “The bike for all of us was so strong and the key to victory. It is a different experience to race as a team and so fun to compete together.”

Ontario’s Myles Zagar, Aron Mohammadi, and Austen Forbes passed Manitoba and Alberta in the final run leg to win the silver with a time of 59:40. Alberta’s men’s team of Russell Pennock, John Pexman, and Cooper Bentley teamed up to post a bronze-medal time of 59:57.

The triathlon events wrap up on Saturday at the Canada Summer Games with the mixed relay.
