Pennock claims Junior Pan American Title in Edmonton

Calgary’s Ellen Pennock gave the home crowd gathered at Hawrelak Park, Edmonton something to cheer about at the PATCO Junior Pan American Championships. The eighteen year old snatched up her first international win by staying in touch with the leaders during the 750-metre swim, and 20-kilometre bike, after which she then ran the fastest 5 kilometres of the day (17:07) to take the title in 1:01:22. Victoria’s Christine Ridenour followed next for second (1:02:28), and Mexico’s Adriana Barraza finished third (1:02:43). Victoria’s Allison Hooper just missed out on the podium in fourth (1:03:00), and Hillary Willie completed the top five (1:03:13). Fellow Canadian’s Amelie Kretz (1:03:16) and Dominika Jamnicky (1:04:09) finished sixth and tenth respectively. “I was quite nervous for this race because I have never raced athletes from outside of Canada before,” said Pennock, who is working with Patrick Kelly (coach of Paula Findlay). “This is the first year that I have really directed my focus towards triathlon. My goal is to stay healthy, race well and continue working on my transitions. I need to remain focused through the summer, but also enjoy what I am doing and keep it fun.” The Junior Men’s race Cobden’s Tristan Woodfine led the way for Canada with a fifth place finish (56:05). Joining him in the top ten were Francis Lefebvre (56:08) in sixth, Tyler Mislawchuk (56:40) in ninth, and Connor Foreman (56:42) in tenth. Lukas Verzbicas (USA) outran everyone (15:05) to win the title in 55:24.

Brault and Sharpe top the podium in San Francisco

Last year, Ottawa’s Tenille Hoogland won the women’s title at the ITU San Francisco Pan American Cup and Winnipeg’s Sarah-Anne Brault continued Canada’s winning tradition one year later. Brault and Kaitlin Shiver (USA) battled it out all day but it was Brault’s top 37:22 10 kilometre run that separated the two and gave her the win (2:05:04). Shiver finished second (2:05:19), and fellow American Julie Ertel took third (2:07:51). Canadians Alexandra Coates finished fourth (2:08:16), and Evelyne Blouin finished ninth (2:13:19). Victoria’s Matthew Sharpe continued Canada’s control of the podium in the men’s race. Like Brault, Sharpe used a strong final run to break away for the win (1:56:42). This left the USA’s Ethan Brown to settle for second (1:56:52), and Costa Rica’s Leonardo Chacon finished third (1:57:23). Calgary’s Jon Bird took fifth in 1:58.39.
