Edmonton will once again welcome paratriathletes as the International Triathlon Union (ITU) announced the schedule for the 2013 ITU Paratriathlon season.
The event will take place Saturday, June 22 at Hawrelak Park as part of the Edmonton Triathlon Festival, which runs from June 16-23. It is one of three Paratriathlon International events on the ITU calendar in 2013.
“We’re excited to once again host an ITU Paratriathlon race in Edmonton,” says Sheila O’Kelly, Executive Director, Edmonton Triathlon Academy. “Last year’s inaugural PATCO Paratriathlon Championships was a highlight of the weekend for spectators, media and organizers.
“Amalgamated Mining Group is pleased to support the paratriathlon for the second year running,” says Tom Flanagan, President, Amalgamated Mining Group. “As an Edmonton-based business, we strongly support hosting high profile events in Edmonton. We are particularly interested in paratriathlon for its truly inspirational nature as the sport gets ready to showcase its exceptional athletes in its Olympic debut at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.”
The 2013 Paratriathlon season will close with the World Championships in London as a part of the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final, September 11-15 in what is expected to be the biggest Paratriathlon event to date. Edmonton will host the 2014 World Triathlon Championships on the Labour Day weekend.
The race is also part of the North American Paratriathlon Race Series, the premier North American racing circuit for elite paratriathletes in the US and Canada. This will be the inaugural race series in North America with the aim of providing domestic competitive opportunities for the two nation’s top paratriathletes. Other Series races will take place in San Diego, CA (April 20 – ITU World Triathlon Series) and Austin, TX (May 27 – US Paratriathlon National Championships).
