At their final meeting of the year in Madrid, the ITU Executive Board made the decision to add a new event, the Sprint and Team World Championships.

The event will feature a series of races, including the age-group and junior sprint, and the age-group, junior/U23 and elite mixed relay world championships. There will also be an elite super-sprint semi-final and finals that will be part of the World Triathlon Series.

The ITU Grand Final, which will be in Abu Dhabi in 2022, will continue to host the elite world championships, along with the standard distance and the super-sprint age-group, paratriathlon and U23 world championships.
