McMahon Highlights Brazil Field

This weekend’s Ironman South American Championship in Florianopolis, Brazil sees Canadian Brent McMahon returning to see if he can move up a few places on the podium after finishing third there last year.

McMahon’s track record at Ironman races is more than impressive. He won Ironman Arizona in 2014, posting the fastest ever debut Ironman (7:55:48), following that up with his speedy third place finish in Brazil last year, where he broke the eight-hour barrier again (7:56:55) before rounding out his 2015 season with a ninth place finish at the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

While the two men who finished ahead of him in Brazil last year (Marino Vanhoenacker and Tim O’Donnell) aren’t in the field, McMahon will still have his work cut out for him if he is to take the South American title on the weekend. His fiercest competition is likely to come from another Olympian (McMahon represented Canada at the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and London in 2012), England’s Tim Don, a former ITU world champion and Ironman 70.3 World Championship bronze medalist, who also won his Ironman debut, taking the title at the 2014 Ironman Mallorca event. Other names to keep an eye on during Sunday’s race include Brazil’s Igor Amorelli, who won this race two years ago, Italy’s Daniel Fontana and Australian Paul Matthews.

Brown and Jahn compete in women’s pro race

There are two Canadians in the women’s pro field: Brooke Brown and Kirsty Jahn. Brown, who is now based in Europe, had a great 2015 season where amongst other wins she took the full-distance titles at Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain and Ironmedoc in France.

Jahn, who lives in New York, did her first Ironman last year in Chattanooga, where she finished as the eighth pro and finished fourth at Ironman 70.3 Panama ealier this year.

The women’s race promises to turn into a running battle, with defending women’s champ, Brazil’s Ariane Monticeli, who ran a 2:56 marathon to get to the ahead of another strong runner, American Liz Lyles. Another American running specialist will join Lyles on the beach in Florianopolis on Sunday – Cait Snow, who has run numerous sub-three hour marathons in her Ironman career (she ran a 2:56 in Kona in 2010 and a 2:58 split in winning Ironman France last year). Germany’s Kristin Moller is another strong runner who will likely work her way into the mix during the final leg of the race.

Ironman will provide live video coverage of the race, along with text coverage and athlete tracking, beginning at 5:45 am EST. The pro men head off at 6:45 am local time, followed by the pro women at 6:50 and the age group field at 7:05.
