Los Angeles 2028 Triathlon Qualification Pathway Formally Approved

World Triathlon

The pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is officially set, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approving the qualification system proposed by World Triathlon. The framework largely mirrors recent Olympic cycles but introduces some meaningful changes aimed at widening global access to the Games.

Triathlon will once again feature three medal events at LA28. The men’s individual, women’s individual, and mixed relay will all be contested, with a total quota of 110 athletes split evenly between men and women (55 each). The qualification window opens on May 18th, 2026, and closes on May 18th, 2028, giving athletes and national federations a two-year runway to secure Olympic places.

Expanded Opportunity for Emerging Triathlon Nations

World Triathlon President Antonio Arimany emphasized that the updated system reflects a deliberate shift toward greater inclusivity, particularly for emerging triathlon nations.

For the first time, two dedicated spots per continent will be available, one earned through Continental Games and one through the World Triathlon Ranking. This change guarantees up to 10 athletes from countries that would otherwise miss qualification a direct pathway to the Games, significantly altering the Olympic landscape for emerging programs.

“There is not anything in world sport quite as powerful as the Olympic Games, and we are proud that we have taken our commitment with both the Olympics but also the development and growth of our sport one step further,” Arimany said. “We have successfully advocated for a historic expansion of the New Flag rule and, for the first time in our Olympic history, there will be two dedicated qualification spots per continent for nations not otherwise qualified. This is not a minor adjustment. It is a structural change designed to open the door wider for athletes from developing triathlon nations to step onto the blue carpet in Los Angeles.”

Additional universality places will also be available, with up to two men and two women invited by the Tripartite Commission to support under-represented national committees.
