Lord and Kemp win Bracebridge Half Iron

Lord defends title, Kemp sets new course record.

At the third annual Bracebridge Half Iron Triathlon, also serving as the Ontario Provincial Long Distance Triathlon Championships, Oakville, Ontario’s Tyler Lord and Aurora’s Shannon Kemp took the men’s and women’s titles.

Lord successfully defended his title by riding into the lead on the hilly course with the top bike split of 2:22:14, and then held on for the win with a 1:33:09 half marathon. His finish time of 4:26:50, was enough to stay ahead of Wiarton’s Jakob Van Dorp (4:29:05), the reigning Canadian Multisport Champion, who was 13th at February’s Coast to Coast World Multisport Championships in New Zealand.

“The swim was fast and getting onto the bike I was excited to see what the Ironman training has done. My goal was all about heart rate and not time, I didn’t even wear a watch,” said Lord. “(I) kept my heart rate around 148 the whole half marathon. Not the fastest half I have ever done but with no taper and with an Iron distance race ahead (Full Rev 3 at Cedar Point on September 12) it was great to take a win again.”

Kemp, second here in 2008, led from the women’s race from beginning to end, and set a new course record of 4:50:50. American Michelle Shoup finished behind Kemp in 5:00:57.

“I felt really good on the run and that was my biggest goal for the day,” said Kemp. “My goal race for the season is Hawaii in October, the Bracebridge race was good timing and a great course for a test race.”

Whitby’s Tricia Bachman took the overall win in the Half Iron Duathlon (7.5 km run, 90 km bike, 21.1 km run). Armed with two race best women’s runs, Bachman finished in 5:15:37, and chopped 17 minutes over the previous course best. In second was Port Colborne’s Adam Bunz (5:25:10), who took the men’s win.
