Josiah Middaugh and Lesley Paterson win the XTERRA West Championship

Canadians Melanie McQuaid finish fourth, and Danelle Kabush fifth.

Josiah Middaugh (USA) and Lesley Paterson (SCO) won the 2013 XTERRA West Championship at Lake Las Vegas Resort in Henderson, Nevada.

After a 22:06 swim (1.5 km), Middaugh put together the top pro men’s split of 1:15:23 on the 30 km bike, and 42:48 on the 10 km trail run to pass Conrad Stoltz (RSA) for the win in 2:20:17. Stoltz held on to second (2:23:23), and American Branden Rakita finished third (2:28:20).

In the women’s race featured some outstanding performances. Guelph’s Christine Jeffrey led the swim (18:59) exiting the water ahead of all pro males, but the race transitioned to the bike, that is where the phenom Paterson took over. Following up on her 21:57 swim, she dominated the bike (1:25:24), and crushed the run (42:42) – the fastest split among all pros including the men. She easily claimed the XTERRA West title in 2:30:03. American Suzie Snyder was second (2:42:59), and Shonny Vanlandingham third (2:45:35).

Victoria’s Melanie McQuaid finished fourth (2:47:28), Calgary’s Danelle Kabush fifth (2:48:34), Squamish’s Brandi Heisterman 11th (3:07:23), and Guelph’s Jeffrey ended up 14th (3:12:07) after some bad luck during the bike ride.
