Johnsen and Martin win Ironman Western Australia

Denmark’s Jimmy Johnsen and New Zealand’s Britta Martin topped the podium today at Ironman Western Australia in Busselton.

The final outcome of both races was determined during the marathon.

Johnsen, who finished fifth at Ironman Cozumel on November 25, grabbed the lead from Australia’s Matty White at the 30 km mark and finished with the top run of 2:54:42 to take the overall win in 8:29:06. Germany’s Horst Reichel, the swim leader (48:50), took second in 8:34:50, and White finished third (8:38:05). Pictou, Nova Scotia’s Ben Cotter finished seventh among pro men (8:48:45).

Martin, lost over 8 minutes to race leaders after the swim and was fourth off the bike, caught up with Australia’s Rebekah Keat with slightly more than 3 km to go in the run. At the 2 km mark, she stepped on the gas and pulled away from Keat for good to earn the victory in 9:13:00. Keat had to settle for a close second (9:14:39), and fellow Aussie Rebecca Hoschke claimed third (9:19:48).
