Jeff Symonds defends at the Great White North Triathlon

Karen Thibodeau takes the title away from Danelle Kabush.

After both finished second at the Saskatoon Triathlon last week, Penticton’s Jeff Symonds and Canmore’s Karen Thibodeau took top honours at the 2013 edition of the Great White North Triathlon held at Stony Plain, Alberta.

Symonds successfully defended his men’s title and also broke the course record of 3:49:09 set by Tom Evans in 2009. Symonds swam 23:06, biked 2:10:28, and ran 1:12:47 to set the new course record time of 3:46:20.

Thibodeau got off to an early lead with a 23:15 swim, extended it with a 2:28:12 ride, and ran 1:30:29 to get away from Lindsay Adam and the hard charging defending champion Danelle Kabush, to win the women’s race in 4:21:55.
