We reported that it seemed unlikely Jan Frodeno would be defending his title at the Ironman World Championship in St. George and now it’s official – the three-time Kona champ announced on Instagram that he won’t be able to attend the race due to a tear in his Achilles tendon.

“That’s the reason why my running didn’t progress past an hour of running,” he said. “It’s gut wrenching – after 2018, the second time that I won’t make it to a big race that I’ve been gunning at.”

Frodeno also alluded to all the ski posts we’ve seen on his social media: “Turns out that back country skiing is a great way to cross train,” he said.

Frodeno’s plan is to prepare as “best he can” for the second Ironman World Championship that will be happening this year in Kona in October.
