Ironman World Championship Women’s Preview
Wellington set to defend this Saturday October 9.
Chrissie Wellington will attempt to make it four Ironman World Championship titles in a row this coming Saturday in Kona.
At Challenge Roth (Germany) on July 17th, Wellington set the new Ironman Women’s World Record at 8:19:13, and every year she gets faster at Hawaii. She also won by over 19 minutes last year. Can anyone step up to challenge her?
“This year the competition is even stronger. I feel so lucky to be able to race World Champions like Julie Dibens, Mirinda Carfrae, Catriona Morrison and so many others. Their presence will make me fight harder, dig deeper, and aspire to even greater heights. That’s what competition is all about,” said Wellington on her blog. “This doesn’t scare me. It excites me. Â But there is no added pressure. No matter what happens on October 9 I will always be a triple World Champion.”
Australia’s Mirinda Carfrae had an impressive Ironman debut last year in Kona with a second place finish, and a women’s best 2:56:51 marathon. A few weeks ago at Ironman 70.3 Muskoka, she showed that her cycling has improved so maybe she might be ready to make at race of it by the time she heads onto the marathon this year.
Aside from Carfrae there is a lot of other all-star talent ready to unseat Wellington from the throne. Including Canadians Tereza Macel, Samantha McGlone, Gillian Moody, and Donna Phelan.
