Ironman Japan Athletes Get A Chance for Kona

Korea Triathlon Jeju gets qualifying slots.

Due to the cancellation of Ironman Japan, the Korea Triathlon Jeju (July 11, 2010) on Jeju Island, South Korea will now have 50 Ironman Hawaii World Championship qualifying slots for athletes originally registered for the Ironman Japan race.

“With the sudden and unexpected cancellation of Ironman Japan, we wanted to provide Japanese and regional athletes with the best possible alternative to qualify for Kona this year,” said Murphy Reinschreiber, WTC’s Managing Director for Asia Pacific. “While there were no opportunities in Japan to stage or cooperate with an existing full-distance event before September 1st, the qualifying deadline, the Jeju International Triathlon is the perfect alternative. Jeju Island, Korea is convenient for most Japanese athletes and the Jeju International Triathlon will provide athletes with a fair opportunity to qualify for Kona.”

The Korea Triathlon Jeju (an iron distance event) will have an “IQ” (Ironman Qualifier) division. Athletes who were originally entered in the 2010 Ironman Japan race are eligible to race in this division in order to compete for qualifying slots to the 2010 Ironman World Championship. Age group awards will be determined by the overall race results.
