Ironman Australia Update

New 70.3 Event for 2011.

The World Triathlon Corporation, in association with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, has announced that Ironman Australia (entering its 25th year) will continue to take place in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, through 2013.

In addition, a new Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie event will take place on the same day and course as the full Ironman race in 2011. The race date will be announced soon.

Both races will see changes such as making it closer to accommodation centers in the heart of Port Macquarie, a one-lap swim course with the transition area located further down river, and a completely redesigned finish line in between the Rydges Hotel and Hastings River.

Ironman Australia Port Macquarie will offer 40 qualifying slots to the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship, while Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie will be a qualifier for the 2011 Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship, held in Phuket, Thailand.

This year’s Ironman Australia Port Macquarie is set to take place in March 28th, with New Caledonia’s Patrick Vernay seeking to win his fourth consecutive Ironman Australia title.

Will the same thing happen to Ironman Western Australia (Busselton, Australia) which takes place this December 5, 2010? Stay tuned.
