The final race is scheduled for May 10, 2025, in Utah, and it will mark the end of the most recent five-year deal between Greater Zion and Ironman.
St. George has only been a host to Ironman and 70.3 racing for 15 years, but in that decade and a half, it saw a number of amazing performances and noteworthy stories unfold. The first race in St. George came in 2010, when the city held a full-distance Ironman and showed off Greater Zion’s stunning views to the broader triathlon community for the first time. In the years that followed, St. George became a must-do event, with triathletes visiting Utah from all over to race the difficult but rewarding course.
In 2013, the race transitioned down from full- to half-distance, and it became the site of the 70.3 North American Championship. This led to the many of the world’s top triathletes visiting St. George every year, and after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the race was selected to host not one, not two, but three world championship races.
In Sept. 2021, 70.3 St. George was the world championship event, and in May of the following year, the 2021 Ironman World Championship (delayed until 2022 due to COVID) also took to the roads of Greater Zion. Just a matter of months after that, the 70.3 worlds returned to Utah, with the world’s best athletes racing in St. George once more. This was the first time in Ironman history that a race has hosted three world championships in a span of just over a year.
“We are proud of the legacy our community has with this event,” Greater Zion Convention & Tourism Office director Brittany McMichael said in an Ironman press release. “Thanks to the community’s support […] Greater Zion has taken the stage as host to world-class athletic events like IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3, and will continue to host many others.”
The 2025 race will once again be the North American Championship, and it is also slated as an Ironman Pro Series event, meaning that Greater Zion will attract the best 70.3 racers from around the globe one last time.
