Ironman 70.3 South Africa Preview

Even though it might seem that all the fastest triathletes in the world have assembled in New Zealand this weekend for Ironman 70.3 Auckland and Challenge Wanaka, there is still more than a few of the world’s most talented and proven triathletes left over to contest the sixth edition of Ironman South Africa.

Great Britain’s Jodie Swallow leads the way and is searching for her third title in a row at East London (Buffalo City). She dominated the race last year and all of last year’s top five (Lucie Reed, Tine Deckers, Claire Horner, and Susie Hignett) are back to challenge her for the top of the podium along with Bella Bayliss.

For the men, Marino Vanhoenacker is not back to defend but the likes of Bart Aernouts, Faris Al Sultan, Stephen Bayliss, James Cunnama, Tim Don, and Ronnie Schildknecht are ready to take over possession of the title.

The 1.9 km calm and warm ocean swim takes place in East London’s Orient Beach, the 90 km bike course features rolling hills, and the race finishes with a flat two loop 21.1 km run.

The race offers 30 qualifying slots to the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Lake Las Vegas, Henderson, Nevada.
