American Andrew Starykowicz and Denmark’s Helle Frederiksen stopped the title defences of Americans Tim O’Donnell (USA) and Kelly Williamson today in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Starykowicz simply rode away from the rest of the field with the top ride of 2:00:45 and he hung on with a 1:21:41 half marathon to win in 3:50:12. France’s Bertrand Billard made his way up through the field to take second (3:51:02), and O’Donnell fought for third in his title defence (3:51:19).
Frederiksen led all women out of the water (25:20), but Germany’s Svenja Bazlen caught up to her and by the time Bazlen headed out on the run she led Frederiksen by 6 seconds. Frederickson then resumed the lead with a 1:25:38 run and secured the win with a 4:11:35 clocking. Bazlen held on for second (4:13:24), and Camilla Pedersen took third (4:19:00). Far back after the swim and bike, Williamson had the top run of the day (1:23:04) to finish fourth (4:21:52).
