Germany’s Michael Raelert and Australia’s Mirinda Carfrae won today’s 11th Ironman 70.3 event at Oceanside, California.

Raelert had the second best swim (22:38), the fastest bike ride (2:15:31), and cruised to a 1:17:15 run to take the win 3:58:27, over the USA’s Matt Reed (4:01:17), and Denmark’s Rasmus Henning (4:02:07). Penticton, B.C.’s Jeff Symonds finished in sixth (4:05:41), Kelowna’s Trevor Wurtele was 12th (4:14:24), and Victoria’s Mike Neill 14th (4:14:56). Calgary’s Carmen Augustini, 68, won the men’s 65-69 age group in 5:48:04.

Carfrae slowly moved her way through the field (fifth off the swim – 26:15, and second off the bike – 2:33:14), blazing her way to yet another top run split (1:17:34) to win the women’s race. Just over 4 minutes behind was the USA’s Lesley Paterson (4:24:31), followed by Canada’s Samantha McGlone (4:26:31). In eighth was Angela Naeth (4:33:41) of Prince George, B.C. Lyndsey Clapperton of Calgary won the women’s 45-49 category in five hours even.
