Inside Edmonton’s New Indoor Triathlon Training Centre — A First of Its Kind in North America

City of Edmonton

Edmonton, Alberta, is on the verge of making a significant mark in North American endurance sport with the opening of a facility designed to support year-round triathlon training under one roof. The Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre is slated to open to the public on January 27, 2026, and when it does, it will be North America’s first indoor triathlon training centre.

Located adjacent to Coronation Park and connected to the newly renovated Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre, the integrated complex combines community recreation with higher-performance training amenities. Its design intentionally brings together the core disciplines of triathlon – swimming, cycling, and running – within a single indoor environment.

Built for Year-Round Multisport Training

The centre’s aquatic component features an eight-lane, 50m pool. Surrounding that are a 333m indoor track, fitness and functional training spaces, multi-purpose studios, and a velodrome-style 250m indoor cycling track.

Beyond its role as a general training venue, the indoor velodrome adds an additional layer of performance application. Controlled, repeatable conditions make velodromes an increasingly useful environment for elite triathletes conducting aerodynamic testing, offering an alternative to wind tunnel sessions. By riding at race-specific speeds while systematically adjusting position and equipment, athletes and coaches can gather meaningful aerodynamic insights in a real-world riding context.

Looking Ahead to Opening Day

As the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre prepares to open its doors on January 27, 2026, the immediate question for many athletes will be how the facility can be used in practice. The centre is designed as a public, multi-use recreation space, meaning access will not be limited to elite or high-performance athletes.

Details on hours, pricing, and access to specific features such as the indoor cycling track are expected to be confirmed by the City of Edmonton closer to the facility’s opening.
