Hoogland first and Widney second in San Francisco

McCartney seventh in the men's race.

At yesterday’s San Francisco ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup, Ottawa’s Tenille Hoogland took top spot in the Elite Women’s race, while Edmonton’s Chantell Widney was just 15 seconds behind in second place.

Hoogland emerged from the 1.5 km swim in a lead group of three (including fellow Canadian Dorelle Hinton – 20:18), then broke free of them during the 40 km bike to ride a 1:08:58 split  – the next fastest group of riders (1:10:18) contained Widney. As for the run, under no real pressure due to her lead, Hoogland coasted in for the win in 2:11:31, and Widney ran a second best 37:58 to get second place (2:11:46). The USA’s Gwen Jorgensen ran the best 10 km of the day (35:26) to come from well back and into third position (2:13:39). Canada’s Martina Wan was seventh, and Manon Letourneau tenth.

In the men’s race it was the Americans turn to occupy the top two spots. Ben Collins beat Victoria’s Andrew McCartney out of the water by 3 seconds (18:22), separated himself from the faster runners in the field during the bike, then ran 35 minutes for a fairly comfortable race win (1:56:19). Countryman Steven Sexton worked his way through the field during the bike and run to finish second (1:56:38), and Brazil’s Adriano Sacchetto ran his way into third (1:56:47). McCartney finished seventh (1:57:53).
