Hinton and Brown win in Magog

The third stop of the Teck National Junior Series.

At Magog, Quebec, Kingston’s Alexander Hinton and Carp’s Joanna Brown captured wins at the third race of the Teck National Junior Series.

Hinton, 19, exited the 750 metre swim in fourth, rode himself to the front of the 20 kilometre bike, then broke free of the large pack during the 5 km run, posting a 16:02 run split and a finish time of 58:29. Quebec’s Charles Khazoom was second (58:42), Guelph’s Ian Donald finished third (58:51).

“It certainly feels good to get the win,” said Hinton to Triathlon Canada. “I hadn’t raced in nearly a month and came so close to winning earlier this year in Coteau-du-Lac, so I am really happy I was able to win.”

Brown, 17, also used her run to claim her victory. Fifth out of the water, she rode up to the front group where she sat until the run. There she ran an extra and still managed the top women’s split of 18:05 to take the win in 1:05:07. Calgary’s Ellen Pennock finished second (1:05:28) – her first podium appearance in the National Series, and Port Hope’s Dominika Jamnicky nabbed third (1:05:39) with the third best run of the day.

“I haven’t been able to do much for the last six days because I was sick so it feels great to be able to win today,” said Brown. “I didn’t have the power I usually have on the bike, and I missed a turn on the course and had to circle back so I had to run quite a bit further, but it worked out and I’m happy.”

The Teck National Junior Series is the nation’s premier development race circuit, which allows athletes and coaches the appropriate focal points for training and monitoring athlete progression. The annual four-race series is used by Triathlon Canada for World Junior Team and Canada Games selections. The Series will culminate with the Junior National Championships in Kelowna, B.C., on August 22.
