Findlay wins in Monterrey

Russell is the top Canadian male.

At the ITU Monterrey World Cup, Edmonton’s Paula Findlay served notice that she is a new Canadian threat on the ITU circuit.

Findlay kicked off her 2010 season in grand style, finishing her first World Cup race and thus taking home her first World Cup win by a 33 second margin. She swam 20:35, biked 1:00:28, and had the fastest run of 34:39 run. Japan’s Ai Ueda (1:57:13) was second and Denmark’s Line Jensen third (1:58:25). Alicia Kaye, on our current magazine cover, was seventh (1:59:09).

“I’m so surprised right now. I really didn’t expect that,” Findlay said at the finish to the ITU Media. “I felt good on the first 5K, but the last half of the run was really a struggle.

Victoria’s Andrew Russell was Canada’s top male in 11th place (1:52:35). Canadian teammates Andre Paul Baillargeon Smith was 37th (1:51:09), Jordan Bryden 42nd (1:52:350, and Andrew McCartney was the first out of the water (18:19) but did not finish the race. Portugal’s Joao Silva was first (1:44:40), followed by the USA’s Matt Chrabot (1:45:05), and Gregor Buchholz of Germany (1:45:08).

“I was a bit nervous before the swim and had a false start,” Silva said. “But I settled down on the bike and felt great during the run.”
