Defending champ out of tomorrow’s Ironman World Championship

Lucy Charles-Barclay has pulled out of tomorrow's race due to a muscle strain

Lucy Charles-Barclay, the defending women’s Ironman world champion, has announced that she has pulled out of tomorrow’s race. The British star has been nursing a calf injury since pulling out of the T100 London event in July, and says she felt pain in her leg yesterday and has been forced out of tomorrow’s race.

Ironman World Championship Nice … time to get serious as we meet (most) of the favourites

It’s with a heavy heart that I share I won’t be able to race in the Ironman World Championships this Sunday,” Charles-Barclay wrote on Instagram. “I felt some pain in my leg yesterday morning. After consulting with my medical team and some scans we’ve confirmed that the discomfort in my leg is due to a grade 1c muscle strain. While it’s a relatively minor issue, racing could turn it into something much more serious, and after what I went through last year, I don’t want to risk facing months of rehabilitation again.”
