Ironman Lake Tahoe victories for Chris McDonald and Asa Lundstrom
Angela Naeth fifth in her Ironman debut.
Four weeks ago Australian Chris McDonald won his third Ironman Louisville, and today he collected another victory at the inaugural Ironman Lake Tahoe.
McDonald used a 2:58:42 marathon to come from behind to win. He passed Germany’s Maik Twelsiek (who just won Ironman Wisconsin on September 8) just past the halfway mark of the run, then by mile 17 he extended his lead to two minutes where he’d hold onto that margin to cross the finish line in 8:55:14 to claim the inaugural title.

The women’s race showed the importance of speedy transitions. France’s Jeanne Collonge actually swam, biked, and ran faster than Sweden’s Asa Lundstrom but Lundstrom’s faster transition times (she went 3:12 faster in combined T1 and T2 times) allowed her to pass Collonge in the final mile of the run to take the victory in 9:58:53 – Lundtrom last won Ironman Kalmar in 2012. Canada’s Angela Naeth finished fifth (10:10:47) in her Ironman debut.
