Challenge Vichy goes tomorrow

Europe’s largest long distance triathlon series reaches France this weekend with Challenge Vichy on Sunday August 19. Set in the picturesque thermal town in the volcanic Auvergne region, the quality field can expect some quick times on this fast course.

Challenge Vichy champion, Stephen BAYLISS (GBR) will come this for a second title. He’ll have strong competition from Petr VABROUSEK (CZE), Per BITTNER (GER), Andriy YASTREBOV (UKR) and Andrej VASTICA (HRV).

In the women’s field, 4 women’s will fight for the victory, Carrie LESTER (AUS), Gina CRAWFORD (NZL), Martina DOGANA (ITA) and Jana CANDROVA (CZE).

The swim start will have the look and feel of Formula 1 straight on rowing lake lanes. The course has the added benefit of being between city’s two bridges that cross the Allier River making it easily accessible to spectators to see all the action.

The 180 km bike takes competitors through the forest before emerging with a breathtaking view of the Auvergne volcanoes and countryside with its iconic wheat fields and sunflowers.

Finally, the predominantly flat run will take place between the City parks and along the banks of the Allier River.

For its second edition, the Challenge Vichy offers two races and has gathered nearly 1,200 athletes. 30 nationalities are represented.

Many will be watching Challenge Vichy with special interest as in 2013 the the race will host the official long-distance European Championships.
