Earlier this week, a collective of pro triathletes announced the official launch of the Professional Triathlon Union (PTU). Among the three governing bodies and top race organizations including the ITU, Ironman and Challenge Family, only the Challenge Family has officially confirmed its support of the union, releasing a statement outlining its commitment to improving standards for professional athletes.

As of January 1, 2016 only PTU members will be permitted to compete at any Challenge Family event in the professional category.

“I’m very excited to see the PTU launch, this is what our sport needs; a unified voice for our pro athletes and professional body working with us to keep improving all aspects of our sport,” said Challenge Family CEO, Zibi Szlufcik. “We have been working alongside these guys for the past eight months since Challenge Bahrain where we hosted the first Pro Athlete Forum and I’m proud that Challenge Family is taking the lead and pledging our support to the pro’s to lift industry standards. All of our licensee’s have also fully supported this initiative, and together with PTU we will implement a new entry process for the professionals in line with other systems to create an industry standard.”
