Carfrae and Doe win Ironman 70.3 Calgary

Australian Mirinda Carfrae defended her Viterra Ironman 70.3 Calgary title today edging out Kelowna’s Heather Wurtele for the win. Carfrae trailed all day. Second behind Ottawa’s Tenille Hoogland (24:45) after the swim (2:20 down), along with Wurtele, Wurtele then rode the top bike split of 2:28:04 to take the race lead. Third behind Wurtele and Hoogland, the run phenom took over the race with a race best 1:20:15 half marathon to win in 4:21:32. Wurtele finished second (4:24:45), and American Linsey Corbin slipped by Hoogland for third (4:30:09).

New Zealand’s Kieran Doe exited the water in fourth (23:15), just 7 seconds down on the USA’s Brian Fleischman, then rode his way into the lead with the top bike split (2:12:11), and maintained the lead with a 1:20:12 run to finish in 3:58:45. Fleischmann settled for second (4:02:14), and Australia’s Paul Matthews was third (4:03:41). Canadian men occupied positions 7 to 10 overall, led by Calgary’s Scott Curry’s 4:07:16.
