Cancelled Races: What Happens to the Qualification Slots?
The cancellation of Ironman France and Ironman 70.3 Nice has left World Championship qualification slots in limbo, with Ironman yet to announce how they will be handled.

There was a lot of news in the triathlon world this morning, but one question hasn’t received much attention: what happens to the single remaining professional women’s qualifying slot for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice that was set to be awarded this weekend at Ironman 70.3 Nice?
Thirteen professional women were on the start list, with six already qualified, including hometown favourite Marjolaine Pierre alongside Lizzie Rayner, Daniela Kleiser, Aurelia Boulanger, Laura Mathews, and Nikita Paskiewiez.
That left seven women still chasing the final qualifying slot. Based on their bib numbers, Anne-Sophie Pierre was the highest-ranked athlete heading into the race, but Jeanne Collonge, Sandra Huon, Mathilde Cartier, Heather Low (a Canadian coming off a DNF at Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant), Carla Dahan, and Juliette Lucet were also in contention.
The question now is how Ironman will handle the unallocated slot. Will it be transferred to another race, with the qualification period extended? If so, will some of the same athletes look to chase it there? Or will the qualifying process simply conclude with one fewer professional woman on the start line in Nice?
On a larger scale, the cancellation also affects age-group athletes hoping to qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in September. Nice was offering 60 qualifying slots per gender, which represents the largest allocation of any event. Only two qualifying races remain for 2026: Ironman 70.3 Les Sables d’Olonne and Ironman 70.3 Jönköping, both on July 5th, each offering 25 slots per gender. But both races are already sold out.
For now, Ironman has not announced whether the remaining professional qualifying slot – or the 120 age-group qualifying slots that were to be awarded at the Nice 70.3 – will be reallocated. Given the significance of the World Championship qualification process, many athletes will undoubtedly be watching closely.
