Canadian Duathlon Championship added to the Toronto Triathlon Festival

Race day is Sunday July 22, 2012.

Triathlon Canada is proud to announce that it will host the 2012 Canadian Duathlon Championship in partnership with the Toronto Triathlon Festival. The July 22 event will, for the first time, provide athletes with the opportunity to experience a truly urban duathlon in Toronto.

“I have special memories of racing duathlon back in the day,” said Simon Whitfield. “I believe sport generally is about accessibility and participation, so adding this race will allow more people to join in the fun which is a great development.”

Triathlon Canada, the International Triathlon Union, Olympic Champion, Simon Whitfield and Sports Focused Consulting are partnering together to make the Toronto Triathlon Festival a reality. One of the main features of the race is the key role the city itself will play, as the urban race route takes participants on an unprecedented path along Toronto’s harbourfront and through the city’s downtown core.

“We are proud to play host to the first Canadian Duathlon Championship since 2009,” said Sports Focused Consulting President, Jeff Chong. “Duathlon is a wonderful part of the multi sport family, and we are hopeful that duathletes will proudly contest their national championship on the Toronto Triathlon Festival race course.”

The 2012 Canadian Duathlon Championship will offer ten World Championship Qualifying Spots per age group for the World Duathlon Championship scheduled for Segovia, Spain, in September 2013.

“Triathlon Canada is the national governing body for the sport of duathlon and as a result, this race is an important part of our stable of events,” said Alan Trivett, Executive Director, Triathlon Canada. “We are thrilled to be able to offer our duathletes a national championship as part of such a compelling and truly Canadian story.”

The reigning Canadian Duathlete of the Year, Lionel Sanders, has confirmed his participation in this year’s race and he is looking forward to the challenge.
