Wilmington, N.C. is to be the site of the world’s first and only totally self-contained endurance sports venue. TriHabitat, LLC formally announced plans to construct the world-class triathlon training and racing facilities on1,100 acres along the banks of the Northeast Cape Fear River.

“After producing well over a thousand triathlons and other events over the years, I developed the vision to create a facility where athletes can train and race on a closed course with optimal spectator viewing areas and amenities,” said Bill Scott, TriHabitat CEO. “With the booming population of endurance sport athletes, the weather and the hospitality, the Wilmington, North Carolina area, specifically Pender County, provides the perfect location for this facility.”

The plans for the venue include a specially designed 25 acre spring-fed lake for swimming, a 22.5 km paved bike loop, a 10.5 km paved run loop, and a state-of-the-art permanent transition area featuring individual stations. Five stadiums will be able to accommodate spectators with ideal viewing. TriHabitat seems to have thought of everything including permanent lifeguard stations, a centralized bike course pit area, and permanent run course aid stations, even a strategic vendor and expo village with tent space. There will also be lodging options including a 20 room lodge and conference center, a collection of rustic cabins, and a 50 site motorhome park with full hook-ups.

TriHabitat plans host an array of endurance events, including triathlons of various distances during a typical calendar year. The facility will also be open daily on a year-round basis for training, camps, clinics and other activities. In addition to triathlons, TriHabitat also expects to produce kayak races, open water swims and bike time trials.

“TriHabitat is a first-of-its-kind facility that is entering the marketplace at exactly the right time,” said Rob Urbach, USA Triathlon CEO. “As the National Governing Body, USA Triathlon is extremely supportive of this concept coming to fruition. It’s a vision that would greatly enhance training and racing within the sport.”

TriHabitat anticipates being open for business in 2016.
