Axel Merckx to compete in Oliver Half Iron Triathlon

His debut triathlon goes June 2.

Retired professional Belgian cyclist Axel Merckx has revealed that he is scheduled to start the Oliver Half Iron Triathlon on June 2 in Oliver British Columbia.

“It will be my first tri ever. It’s never too late to try,” said Merckx to Triathlon Magazine Canada earlier this week, as he prepares for the 2km swim, 90 km bike and 21 km race. “I am looking forward to the race and the training towards it.”

Merckx, son of cycling legend, Eddy Merckx, retired from cycling in 2007 after an illustrious 14-year career that included winning a Bronze Medal at the 2004 Olympics.  Canada has become an adopted country for Merckx, as he set roots down in in British Columbia after marrying Canadian triathlete, Jodie Cross. Merckx is currently the Director of the Bontrager Cycling Team – a cycling development team –  and co-owner of the Granfondo Axel Merckx that is set to go once again this summer on July 7 out of Penticton.
