Andrew Starykowicz’s Nightmare Race Experience

Thrown in prison after colliding with an aid station volunteer.

On March 3, 2012, American Andrew Starykowicz led the Abu Dhabi Triathlon and looked on his way to taking the victory when an aid station volunteer ran out in front of him and to end his hopes of a lucrative win.

Both he and the volunteer were hospitalized. However, Starykowicz not only had to deal with his multitude of injuries, to his surprise he was questioned by police and thrown in prison with a hit and run charge.

After one month, Starykowicz was finally allowed back home after making a sizeable bond payment which was supposed to be refunded to him once the volunteer left the hospital. She is back home in England and he is still awaiting the return of the funds.
