Al-Sultan and Steffen win the Ironman European Championship

Aernoets and Goos defend titles at Ironman 70.3 Antwerp.

Al-Sultan and Steffen win the Ironman European Championship

Germany’s Faris Al-Sultan donned his speedo once again for a well-earned victory. Trailing out of the water, he then used a top 4:46:22 bike split to build a sizeable lead of close to 9 minutes over his closest chaser. His 2:57:25 marathon sealed his European Ironman Championship win (8:13:50).

German’s Jan Raphael ran a 2:49:48 marathon to move up to second spot (8:19:31), and fellow German Michael came off the bike in tenth but ran the top split of the day (2:47:55) to get third in 8:20:26.

Lucie Zelenkova (CZE) led the swim for the women (47:59), but Switzerland’s Caroline Steffen crushed the women’s field with a 4:51:07 ride (the only woman to bike under 5 hours). After the ride she held a 13:40 lead over Zelenkova and while she struggled with a 3:27:38 marathon, it was still good enough to hand on for the win (9:12:13). Zelenkova chased hard but ran out of real estate to finish second (9:13:46), and Germany’s Sonja Tajsich made up ground with a 3:04:48 run going from eighth to third (9:14:14).

Support fund for Arthur

Golazo Sports, organizer of the Antwerp Ironman 70.3, has opened a relief fund for Arthur Aghajanyan, the medical student who crashed during the race on Sunday and subsequently died.

All donations will be transferred to his family. Arthur is of Armenian descent and had been living in Belgium with his mother for twelve years.

“Arthur lived with his mother. These are very difficult times for her. To make things not too hard for her financially as well, we have started a relief fund. Anyone can donate to that, ” Bob Verbeeck, CEO of Golazo, said. “Golazo already paid 15,000 euros and this on behalf of all participants in the Antwerp Ironman last Sunday.”

As of Tuesday afternoon (July 26) you can find more precise information from the Antwerp Ironman website (www.antwerpironman.be) about how to proceed and support the fund.
