26th Ultraman World Championships

Le Roux and Monforte take the win.

After 3 days and 515 kilometres, Australia’s Mike Le Roux and the USA’s Amber Monforte were crowned Ultraman World Champions.

Fourth at last year’s championships, Le Roux sat in second after day one, third after day two, and made up a 31 minutes and 25 seconds on day three to move to the top of the podium. Le Roux was able to do this by covering the final day’s 84.4 km run segment in 6:31:45. After leading for two days, Sweden’s Jonas Colting followed for second (22:19:54), and the USA’s Slater Fletcher got third (22:21:54).

Monforte, the 2009 Ultraman Canada Champion, trailed after day one but took control of the race by crushing the bike course record ride on day two (7:57:58 – the previous record was 8:39:40) then topping it off with a 7:47:29 run on the final day to establish the new Ultraman best time by a female (24:07:11). In her Ultraman debut, Hillary Biscay (USA) crossed the line in second (24:40:28), and Shanna Armstrong (USA), the defending champion, finished third (24:43:57).
