2027 Ironman 70.3 World Championship Headed to Chattanooga

The wait is over.

After months of speculation and one of the latest venue announcements in recent memory, Ironman has officially confirmed Chattanooga, Tennessee, as the host city for the 2027 Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

In recent years (apart from COVID), Ironman has typically announced its 70.3 World Championship venue by end of April. This year, however, the absence of an announcement fueled widespread discussion among athletes and fans about where the championship might land and whether broader changes within the sport could influence the event’s future.

The timing was particularly notable given the upcoming launch of the new Triathlon World Tour in 2027, which will bring together the PTO, World Triathlon, and Challenge Family. Recent meetings between Ironman CEO Scott DeRue and World Triathlon President Antonio Fernández Arimany only added to the speculation.

For now, however, Ironman appears set to continue operating much as it always has. The organization announced Chattanooga as the 2027 Ironman 70.3 World Championship host this morning, reaffirming the event’s place on the global racing calendar.

While Ironman has yet to formally confirm the location of the Ironman World Championship beyond 2026, there has been little indication that the event will move from its long-standing home in Kona.

A Return to Tennessee

Chattanooga is no stranger to hosting major triathlon events. The city first joined the Ironman circuit in 2014 and went on to host the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2017, where Javier Gomez and Daniela Ryf claimed world titles.

That championship also marked the first time the Ironman 70.3 World Championship was contested over two days, with men’s and women’s races held separately – a format that will once again be used at this year’s championship. Joining Gomez on the men’s podium were Ben Kanute and Tim Don, while Emma Pallant-Browne and Laura Philipp completed the women’s podium.

The 2017 world championship bike course also featured the iconic climb over Lookout Mountain, adding a significant challenge to the day. While Chattanooga’s current Ironman 70.3 course is known for being flatter and faster, many athletes have already taken to social media to express their hopes that Lookout Mountain will return for the 2027 championship.

Final course details have yet to be announced, but the venue announcement was largely met with enthusiasm across the triathlon community.

The timing is also significant, as the qualification period for the 2027 Ironman 70.3 World Championship begins shortly on July 4th.
