It must be the week of an Ironman World Championship – the new bike announcements are coming fast and furious! The latest comes from BMC, who have collaborated with Formula 1’s Red Bull Advanced Technologies to develop what they are calling the “world’s fastest race bike.” The two companies have been working together since 2018 – “BMC utilized Red Bull Advanced Technologies’ extensive simulation and modelling capacity for design decisions to optimize speed, power, and ride quality,” the company said in a release.

“The simulation know-how of Red Bull Advanced Technologies is very complementary to our in-house expertise of bicycle design and structural knowledge,” said Stefan Christ, the head of research and development at BMC Switzerland. “Simulating not only the vehicle performance, but the entire performance environment, offers huge opportunities in the collaboration and finally makes BMC athletes even faster. Building the prototypes in our very own Impec Lab here in Grenchen, Switzerland helped us to be fast in development but also realizing exactly our vision of the bike.”

Olympic medallist and Tour de France stage winner Fabian Cancellara was involved in the development of the bike, too.

“Two worlds from different sports have come together to create something cycling has never seen before,” Cancellara said. “It has been fascinating to be involved in this project from its early stages, to continually test the athlete and machine interface. Being part of the development of a cutting-edge bike, employing some radical principles and being given the chance to influence its performance from a rider perspective has been amazing. The finished prototype is incredible, and I look forward to what’s next.”

BMC Pro Triathlon athlete Patrik Nilsson will ride the bike at this weekend’s Ironman World Championship. There aren’t a lot of details about the bike other than what we can glean from photos provided with today’s release.

The new design appears to utilize wider fork and rear dropouts. The bike also comes with Red Bull-branded wheels. Photo: BMC
The frame appears to be extremely aerodynamic, with a removable storage compartment similar to what we’ve seen in other aero frames. This prototype is equipped with a single front chainring – the group set appears to be SRAM’s Red eTap AXS. Photo: BMC
No surpises with the use of disc brakes – which is pretty much the norm with new bike releases these days. Photo: BMC
